Whether you’re staycationing or jetting off abroad this summer, chances are you’ll be enjoying time outdoors in the sunshine.

But as we slather on the sun cream to faces and bodies, 닥터스피부과 are any of us giving a second thought to what the sunshine is doing to our hair?

No favours, that’s what.
Both forms of UV light — the deep-penetrating UVA and sunburn-producing UVB — can harm hair as well as skin, leaving it dry, brittle and thinning.

‘UVB radiation can cause degradation of the hair proteins, and UVA radiation can cause colour changes,’ says consultant dermatologist Dr Anita Takwale, a specialist in hair and nail disorders at Stratum Clinics.
And these UV-induced changes aren’t good news for the way your hair looks and feels.
<div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group” style=”style”>

Claire Coleman gives verdict on a selection of products available in the UK for summer-proof-hair (file image)

Stylist Michael Van Clarke undertook an experiment to test how the sun’s powerful rays affect our locks.
‘We took wefts of hair to the Maldives and pinned them to the dock so they were subjected to the sun and sea, while another identical weft was kept inside as a control,’ he says. ‘After seven days, not only had the unprotected hair become brittle, faded and distinctly thinner, but it had lost 10 per cent of its weight, too.'

So what’s really going on when the sun hits your hair?

‘Ultraviolet rays from sun exposure cause oxidation of proteins in our hair, resulting in the production of free radicals, or unstable molecules, that can lead to degradation of our hair’s outer protective layer [the hair cuticle],’ says consultant trichologist Eleanore Richardson, of the Institute of Trichologists.

‘That process chips away at the structural integrity of our hair shaft and eventually leads to hair feeling dry, brittle and splitting easily.'

When the pigment in your hair is oxidised, it’s ultimately undergoing the same reaction that it does when it’s bleached, explains Anabel Kingsley, of the Philip Kingsley Clinics.

<div data-track-module=”am-related_carousel^related_carousel” data-track-selector=”.rotator-panels a:not([class*=external])” data-dm-rotator-rotate=”false” data-track-pos=”static” data-preferred-shared-network-enabled=”” data-dm-rotator-auto-init=”” id=”p-18″ class=”related-carousel with-fb-or-tw femail half” data-dm-rotator-active-class=”active” data-dm-rotator-page-count=”1.0″ data-dm-social-article-auto-init=”” data-dm-rotator-page-size=”1″> <div class=”rotator bdrcc”>

RELATED ARTICLES
<ul class=”rotator-pages link-xocc”>
Previous

‘The hair becomes more porous, and can absorb and release moisture much more quickly, meaning it’s more prone to dryness and 닥터스피부과 damage when you’re styling it, or 닥터스피부과 just brushing it,’ she says.

Coloured hair is most at risk of sun damage, and if your hair is long or already fragile, it will require more protection than shorter styles that haven’t been coloured or heat styled.

Thankfully, there are hair-specific products out there which tend to contain conditioning ingredients as well.

As a rule, if it’s hot enough for you to be putting sun protection on your body, you should be protecting your hair, too.

You could pile it under a hat, of course — but in this summer of renewed freedom, we all want to show off our locks rather than hide them away.

So for summer-proof hair, try one of these .

It contains sunflower extracts he says offer ‘natural protection from UV rays [which] helps prevent colour fade and sun damage’, as well as proteins to help repair, strengthen and protect hair.

Use on damp hair as a leave-in conditioner.
It will give a bit of definition to beach waves, although it might be a bit heavy for very fine hair. 4/5

<span class=”mol-style-bold mol-style-medium femail-ccox”>FRESH AND LIGHT

Davines SU Hair Milk, £20, uk.davines.com
<div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group”>

Claire said Davines SU Hair Milk (pictured) has a UV filter, but needs to be reapplied during the day to maintain protection

With an almond scent, 신사역 피부과 this lightweight spray works best when used as a leave-in conditioner.

It has a number of ingredients designed to soften and moisturise hair, and a UV filter.But the filter isn’t very stable — it breaks down when exposed to sunlight — so you’ll need to reapply during the day to maintain protection. 3/5

<span class=”mol-style-bold mol-style-medium femail-ccox”>FLORAL FAVOURITE

Nuxe Moisturising Protective Milky Oil for Hair, £15.50, uk.nuxe.com
<div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group” style=”style”> <div class=”mol-img” style=”height: auto;”>

Claire said Nuxe Moisturising Protective Milky Oil for Hair (pictured) has three different UV filters

Not only does this spray smell like wonderful holidays — with notes of Tahitian gardenia, orange blossom and vanilla — but it also packs a hefty punch with an impressive three different UV filters.

Together these offer a broad spectrum of protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Most of the other options have only one filter, offering UVB protection.

This is best used on wet hair, because it could make dry hair look a little greasy. 5/5

<span class=”mol-style-bold mol-style-medium femail-ccox”>SAY NO TO GREASE

Ultrasun Daily UV Hair Protector, £20.40, justmylook.com
<div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group”>

Claire said Ultrasun Daily UV Hair Protector (pictured) contains a UV filter alongside a number of antioxidant ingredients to help protect hair from UV rays, chlorine and salt water

Like all the products I tried, this lightweight spray can be spritzed on to either wet or dry hair — I tried them all on damp hair.

It contains a UV filter alongside a number of antioxidant ingredients to help protect hair from UV rays, chlorine and salt water.

This one stands out from the others I tested because it doesn’t leave hair looking greasy, so could easily be used on dry hair before a day out around town. 4/5

<span class=”mol-style-bold mol-style-medium femail-ccox”>MAKE A SPLASH

Philip Kingsley Swimcap, £19.50, philipkingsley.co.uk
<div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group”>

Claire said Philip Kingsley Swimcap (pictured) needs to be reapplied throughout the day because the UV filter loses 50 per cent of its efficacy after 85 minutes

Originally developed for the U.S.
Olympic synchronised swimming team, this water-resistant cream combines oils with a UV filter and conditioning ingredients to protect against sun, salt and chlorine damage.

Comb through damp hair before going into the sun, and double shampoo to remove.

It’s heavy, so definitely one for slicked-back beach and pool-side styles, and the old-fashioned scent might put some people off.

Plus it will need reapplying for full protection — the UV filter loses 50 per cent of its efficacy after 85 minutes.

Perfect for a day’s sightseeing. 3/5
